So when I was listing my interests, I had to change writing to "playwriting" because writing is what I do all day. Before email was in common use, my mother used to complain that I didn't write often enough to her. When you write marketing copy all day, you feel obligated to be "on" all the time. I hate the term "copywriter," as though nothing of what I say is original.
Another of my communication habits is to started a conversation with "So..." "So I was in my living room, just watching TV, when all of a sudden..." "So I'm driving down I-35, when it occurs to me..." It's as though my life is "mid-joke." And I'm just trying to get everyone up to speed on the story so far! So a funny thing happened on the way to the punchline...
I'm a widow. Odd to think of myself as that, since I feel the presence of my late husband Jim so much in my day-to-day life, that I rarely think of him as really being "gone." When I think about dating again, it exhausts me. I'm comfortable with myself at last - but - the moments when I miss him most are the small ones: sharing an order of bacon at IHOP... waiting for the movie to start ... playing "Name That Tune" with songs on the oldies stations. I would be more likely to welcome a companion with similar interests.
After years of serving commercial radio as Talent, Writer and Producer, I have turned my back on it and have become a total Satellite Radio SNOB. Whenever I ride with a friend, I grimace at what radio has become as though confronted with an unidentified stench in the upholstery.
Employed by a company that produces audio productions, I find more artistic gratification as a writer, director, performer and sound effects artist with The Violet Crown Radio Players. I also lead Ghost Tours of downtown Austin through Haunted Texas.
